I do miss tea, you know.
\nIced especially, would be lovely
\nbut the dreams of chill and clink
\nmelt quickly under equator sun,
\nand canon fire lacks, as accompaniment.
\nI write with some regret, Anna—
\nnot for the rocs themselves,
\nor breaking our agreement,
\nnor thirty years of high sea hijinks
\nhelping myself to gold and spice,
\nyardarms and yeomen,
\nwhat books the babies let me read
\nbetween their dives of great destruction.
\nNor all the stars that you will never see in Sweden.
\nI regret I took away your dream
\neven while you gave me one
\nI didn’t know held all my happiness.
\nI hope you got your tea, acres of plants
\nturning that northern light to tart
\nand complex on the taster’s tongue.
\nI hope this letter finds its way to you.
\nMy notoriety is built on flame and claw
\nand once my last breath slips away
\nso will the rocs.
\nWhat fame I leave may be insufficient postage.<\/p>\n
